Test Your Limits and Grow!
Unless
you try to do something beyond what you’ve already mastered, you
will never grow.
That
was the statement I left behind on a piece of paper as I bolted
out the door to get in a mountain bike ride before the sun set.
I had no idea at that point how important those words would become.
Mountain
biking off trails can be quite intimidating, with dirt ruts and
uneven ground to navigate. I made my way down a foot-wide groove,
keeping my eyes focused ahead, building confidence with speed. Just
when I was feeling comfortably exhilarated, my course led to a frighteningly
steep drop off the hillside. Panicking, I skidded to a halt. I paused,
sized it up, and thought, “I can do it.”
I forged
ahead, only to find myself gripping the brakes for a second time,
and then, a third. Turning away, I thought, “I’ll try it another
time.” I headed back in the direction I’d come, only to hear the
phrase I’d left behind on that sheet of paper.
Have
you ever felt you wanted to forget something and just go on?I
tried, but I couldn’t get that phrase out of my head. The urge to
master that drop kept nagging, until I finally stopped and turned
my bike around. With my heart pounding and sweat beading up on the
palms of my hands, I headed right for the drop off. I don’t even
think I took a breath before flying over that ridge. Elated, I sailed
down the incline, as if I’d done it a million times. You could hear
me shout from the top of my lungs, “Yes!!! I did it!”
The
words casually scrawled on a piece of paper that afternoon came
to life.
